This is a story of strong women, the men they met, the choices they made, and the consequences that followed, which put them all in the ICU on the same day. Nurse Mandy, a widowed mother of a thirteen-year-old boy, works in that ICU, which is forever surrounded by pain, suffering, and death, while an unexpected visit from a poltergeist is never far away. With every shift, she becomes a psychiatrist, family counselor, disciplinary mom, referee, medical mediator, and legal interpreter as the line between what's legal and what's ethical becomes blurred. This day was no exception.
The personalities of her patients, their doctors, the families, their lawyers, and the antics of her son rule the day as she struggles to maintain some semblance of workday order. In the midst of all this hubbub, Mandy longs for an intimate relationship but denies that she even wants one. Her nurse friend Darcy is her antagonist who eggs her on to find a date that has a hilarious ending.
We are all weary of an unforgiving world that slowly chisels away at our sense of well-being. But, I offer you a temporary respite from this uncomfortable onslaught and introduce you to “Soldier On”. A true story of my late wife’s 15-year losing battle with ovarian cancer. The biography is told through my eyes, her husband of 30 years and an RN for 40, 20 of those in the ICU. It is a tale of how those seemingly innocuous life lessons that she learned before cancer had inadvertently prepared her to deal with the profound challenges she faced after the cancer diagnosis. I witnessed Kath's unbelievable calmness while she confronted a long drawn out uncertain future. It's a courageous tale of a strong woman. It is her story. Hopefully, even though she died in the end, understanding how she faced her death, will leave you just a little bit stronger and remind you of what is really important in life
